What to expect from this study session - 17TH jULY 2025:

OBJECTIVES:

To understand the symptoms and physiology of laryngeal hypersensitivity in dysphagia including the differential diagnostic considerations:

o  Laryngeal hypersensitivity symptoms 

o  Respiratory dysphagia

o  Oesophageal dysphagia

o  Functional neurological disorder and dysphagia

o  Psychological considerations 

5 PRESENTATIONS:

An overview of laryngeal hypersensitivity in swallowing and current speech and language therapy practices: Sophie Chalmers (Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust) 


Differential diagnoses and management of disorders affecting the upper oesophageal sphincter and the impact of oesophageal dysphagia: Jo Clayton (Liverpool University Hospitals Foundation Trust)


The impact of respiratory conditions on dysphagia presentations: Helen Moorhouse (Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust) 


Functional dysphagia symptoms from the perspective of functional neurological disorders: Lisa Roberts (Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust) 


A psychological perspective on laryngeal hypersensitivity-related dysphagia: Dr Lloyd Gemson (Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust)
